Calistoga spa's quietude
The Calistoga Ranch resort spa, a former campground for tents, RVs and trailers off the Silverado Trail in Napa Valley, now boasts luxurious lodges with shingle-clad, custom trailer rooms in addition to its already impressive menu of pampering options. Sets of four rooms per lodge, intended for fractional ownership or short stays, are arranged around a rectangular deck shaded by an Arts and Crafts-style wood and translucent panel pergola designed by SB Architects. Among other creature comforts at the ranch, such as outdoor fireplaces and showers, are ultra-quiet weed whackers: Babydoll Southdown sheep.
The designer ovine, under the watchful eye of a dog from Petaluma's Canvas Ranch, graze near the suites or amid the ranch's 2-acre vineyard, keeping it weed-free ecologically and without a sound.
The sheep can't reach up high, "so the vines are very safe," says General Manager Coni Thornburg.
