The Spa Food Philosophy

By Linda van Doornerwaard

The philosophy behind spa food is simple, not to mention universal. It is designed to feed your body on all levels, with colours and textures that are visually appealing and tastes and aromas that satisfy, stimulate and cleanse.

Contrary to popular belief, the food served up at modern spas and health resorts does not consist of a few meager bean sprouts or a bowl of mushy porridge, as some people may think.

The secret to eating healthily is balance. Whether you’re cooking at home dining out or choosing a takeaway. Make sure you always incorporate the six essential groups in your daily diet.

Fruits and vegetables: five to nine servings per day is recommended. Try to include them in soups, salads, sandwich filings, stir-fries and juices.

Carbohydrate-rich foods: Moderate sized portions of brown rice, millet, grains, soybeans, corn potatoes. Don’t just stick to pasta and bread which is low in fiber.

Protein-rich foods: fish, poultry, soy foods, beans, eggs, low-fat dairy foods, nut seeds and lean meat. These highly concentrated proteins will satisfy hunger and sustain energy levels.
